Sensory Assessment
A Sensory Assessment is a thorough evaluation designed for individuals to explore how they perceive and respond to sensory stimuli. This includes observing reactions to touch, movement, sight, sound, and more. By delving into these aspects, we aim to provide a roadmap for understanding and nurturing sensory development in both children and adults.

When might you find value in a Sensory Assessment, and what outcomes should you anticipate from having one completed?
Where and how is it completed?
The Sensory Assessment is conducted through observation, questionnaires, and information gathered from educators, carers or the individual themselves. This holistic approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of an individual's sensory experiences.
What presentations/traits may be suitable for a Sensory Assessment?
Below is a list of common presentations that warrant consideration for a Sensory Assessment, applicable to both children and adults:
- Easily distracted by noise/smells
- Flings limbs around
- Enjoys spinning
- Overly sensitive to light
- Difficulty holding objects
- Struggles to identify changes in temperature
- Becomes dysregulated often by sounds, touch, tastes, textures, and other sensory information
- Has difficulty focusing in various environments
What will the Sensory Assessment assess?
The occupational therapist will utilise the Sensory Assessment to gain insight into how an individual interprets the sensory environment around them in daily life, including at work, in the community, school, childcare and at home. This involves a detailed questionnaire assessing how sensory difficulties impact functionality, providing valuable insights for tailored support.
